Woman forced into sex trade

Katerina lives in Halifax. Her room is furnished with a mattress, a toilet, and barred windows.

She came to Canada expecting to work as a waitress, trusting a Ukrainian employment agency that provided her with fake travel documents and paid for her expenses.

Traffickers met Katrina at the Halifax airport, confiscated her documents and locked her in a house. They hold her captive and force her to have sex with strangers many times a day in order to "repay her debt."

Katerina once tried to flee during her daily walk. She asked for help, but no one could understand her English. Her skimpy clothing startled people. With nowhere to go she returned to her captors and was badly beaten. They threaten to kill her if she ever tries to escape again.

On an anonymous tip, the police raid the house where Katerina is being held. They jail her for almost three weeks while the authorities prepare to deport her back to Ukraine. Katerina cries because she is afraid that her captors will find her again.
